Elf on the Shelf: Fun, Creativity & Family Bonding

This is what happens when teenagers take control of hiding the elf.  Christmas ~2015

My son looks forward to the Elf on the Shelf tradition every year. He loves searching for his elves, Niccolia and Snowflake and gets a kick out of discovering where they've hidden themselves each day. He has also enjoyed the addition of some Elf on the Shelf pets over the years. Jaime's son has an elf named Caleb. It became a ritual for her stepdaughters to take charge, find new spots, and plan activities for Caleb. Now, she has taken up the mantle of hiding Caleb, but it's for her granddaughter to see. As we edge closer to the holiday season, it's clear that Elf on the Shelf has woven its way into the hearts of families everywhere. This fun and quirky tradition has quickly become a holiday staple, spreading joy, sparking creativity, and adding a sprinkle of magic to the festive season. So, what's the story behind Elf on the Shelf, and how did it become such an endearing part of our holiday celebrations? Let’s explore the enchantment that surrounds this festive favorite.

What is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a holiday tradition that involves a special scout elf sent from the North Pole to observe children and report back to Santa Claus. Each elf has a storybook explaining their role in the holiday season. According to the tradition, the elf arrives at the beginning of December and finds a new spot to “hide” each night. Each morning, children excitedly search for their elf, eager to discover where it has moved and what new mischief it might be up to.

You may be asking, when does the Elf on the Shelf start? Our elves typically appear the day after Thanksgiving, but that is really up to you. Traditionally, the start is December first. However, the earlier the elf appears, the more opportunities your family has to enjoy this tradition.

The Origins of the Tradition

The Elf on the Shelf tradition began with a children’s book of the same name, written by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. Published in 2005, the book tells how Santa’s scout elves help him by reporting on children’s behavior. The concept quickly gained popularity, and the accompanying elf dolls became a holiday staple in many homes. The tradition has become a broader cultural phenomenon, with various themed accessories and spin-offs.

Why We Love Elf on the Shelf

1. Fostering Holiday Excitement
The arrival of the Elf on the Shelf marks the official start of the holiday season for many families. The daily search for the elf creates a sense of anticipation and excitement that builds throughout December. The elf’s playful antics and creative hiding spots add extra fun to the holiday season.

Suggestions & Ideas:

  • Elf Arrival Party: Kick off the tradition with a small "Elf Arrival" breakfast or party on December 1st. Include themed treats like elf-shaped cookies, and let your kids open a small gift from the elf, such as Christmas pajamas or a new holiday book.

  • Countdown Activities: Incorporate a countdown calendar corresponding with the elf’s movements, building anticipation each day leading up to Christmas.

2. Encouraging Positive Behavior
The idea behind Elf on the Shelf is that the elf observes children’s behavior and reports back to Santa. This aspect of the tradition can serve as a gentle reminder for children to be on their best behavior, reinforcing positive habits and good manners in a fun and engaging way.

Suggestions & Ideas:

  • Good Deed Challenges: Each morning, the elf can leave notes encouraging kids to perform acts of kindness, such as helping around the house, sharing toys, or making holiday cards for neighbors.

  • Behavior Reward Chart: Pair the elf’s presence with a behavior chart where kids can earn stars for positive actions. At the end of the week, they can receive small rewards or privileges as encouragement.

3. Promoting Family Bonding
Elf on the Shelf can be an excellent way to bring families together during the busy holiday season. From setting up elaborate scenes to creating new hiding spots each night, the tradition provides opportunities for parents and children to collaborate and share in the season's excitement.

Suggestions & Ideas:

  • Family Elf Planning Night: Dedicate one night to brainstorming and planning creative elf antics together. This can be a fun activity where everyone contributes ideas for where the elf might show up and what it might do.

  • DIY Elf Costumes & Accessories: Engage your children in making little costumes or props for the elf, such as tiny scarves, hats, or even a mini sled. This can become a fun arts and crafts session.

4. Sparking Creativity
The elf’s antics can range from mischievous pranks to heartwarming scenes, sparking creativity and imagination in children and adults. Parents often enjoy coming up with new and inventive ways to position the elf, adding an element of surprise and delight to each day.

Suggestions & Ideas:

  • Themed Weeks: Plan themes for each week, like "Winter Wonderland," "Elf’s Kitchen," or "Toyland Takeover." For example, during "Elf’s Kitchen," the elf could be caught baking cookies or making a mess with flour.

  • Interactive Notes: Leave little riddles, jokes, or treasure hunts led by the elf. These can be simple clues or puzzles that guide children to find where the elf is hiding or even small treats around the house.

5. Creating Lasting Memories
The memories created through the Elf on the Shelf tradition are often cherished for years. The joy of finding the elf each morning, the laughter shared over its antics, and the sense of wonder it inspires contribute to a magical holiday experience that families remember fondly.

Suggestions & Ideas:

  • Elf Photo Album: Document the elf’s adventures each year and compile them into a photo album. This makes for a delightful keepsake that can be revisited each Christmas season.

  • Elf Farewell Celebration: On Christmas Eve, have a small goodbye party for the elf. The elf can leave behind a note thanking the children for a wonderful time and perhaps a tiny Christmas gift as a parting gesture.

Tips for Making the Most of Elf on the Shelf

  • Balance Fun and Tradition: While the elf’s antics are meant to be fun, ensure the tradition remains enjoyable. Avoid putting too much pressure on creating elaborate setups and focus on the joy and magic of the experience.

  • Plan Ahead: Use a calendar to pre-plan where the elf will be each day. It’s helpful to have a list of ideas ready, so you don’t feel rushed to come up with something each night.

  • Elf Alternatives: If you have older kids or are looking for a new twist, consider using the elf to introduce fun family activities. Instead of just hiding, the elf can bring instructions for a family game night, a holiday baking session, or a special outing.

  • Set Rules: Decide early on how much interaction is allowed. While some families enjoy elaborate set-ups, others keep it simple. Setting rules helps manage expectations and avoids any holiday stress.
