10 Steps to Prepare for Christmas Starting in the Fall
In my early 20s, part of my job involved supporting Christmas sales, which meant we started planning for the holiday season as early as January. By the time Christmas arrived, I was utterly burnt out. I wasn’t excited to decorate or get into the Christmas spirit because I had spent the entire year immersed in it.
Now that I no longer work in retail in that capacity, I’ve rediscovered my love for the holiday season. Over the past five years, I’ve embraced the festive spirit, eagerly listening to Christmas music from November 1st until New Year’s. I usually pull out the decorations within the first week of November—although I know that’s a bit early for most people, so I don't recommend decorating quite that soon in the guide below. Our 17-year-old son has always enjoyed having the house decorated, even if he’s not thrilled about helping carry the decorations up from the basement! When January rolls around and the holidays end, I feel sad as winter settles in.
With school and the fall season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about the upcoming Christmas season. Preparing early helps alleviate stress and allows you to enjoy the holiday spirit fully. Here’s a guide to help you get ready for Christmas, focusing on self-care, preparing for family events, buying gifts, and decorating your home.
We designed a Christmas Planner on Amazon and Zulu Bookstore as the perfect companion to this blog post. Our goal was to elevate your entire planning experience. Each planner covers everything from budgeting and menu planning to decorating details and card writing, guiding you step by step toward the big day—Christmas. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
I. Budget Planning
Setting a Holiday Budget
Begin by establishing your overall spending limits. Consider every aspect of the holiday, including gifts, food, decorations, and travel. A clear budget prevents overspending and ensures you can enjoy the season without financial stress.
Gift Budgeting
You can allocate a budget for each person on your gift list. Setting aside extra funds for unexpected gifts or last-minute additions is wise.
