5 Ways to Destress and Refresh After the Holiday Season

Christmas flying by

It's hard to believe that it's already December 27th. Christmas feels like a blur that zipped by—like I was watching The Flash zoom past! Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year, and my kids love it just as much. Thankfully, my husband has come to accept that we start putting out most of our decorations the first weekend after Halloween.

On the night of December 23rd, I had a poignant moment just before bed. I realized that Christmas was almost here but would soon come to an end. This means my days of listening to Christmas music and enjoying the warmth of holiday ambiance on the TV as background noise are limited.

This holiday season felt extra special with family. My stepson came in from Chicago, and my stepdaughter was in and out of the house with her fiancé (yay for them!) and their adorable granddaughter. My parents even visited for about 24 hours, although my dad had a cold and wanted to get home to rest. It’s been a whirlwind of family dinners, attending two Christmas services, plus fitting in a dentist appointment for our son and a vet appointment for our dog. Unfortunately, the news wasn’t good for our furry friend—he has skin cancer and needs surgery next week. On top of all this, my husband’s biological mother passed away, and he's currently planning a trip for her funeral at the end of the month. There’s just so much going on!

With everything happening, finding moments of peace and quiet has been a challenge. One thing I’ve found therapeutic is writing for the blog. It truly helps me process everything. I’m also getting over a cold, but I plan to start a walking routine again. Honestly, now feels like the perfect time with the unseasonably warm weather in Ohio; the 50s are just great for getting outside, breathing in fresh air, and getting moving.

Another way I plan to de-stress is by creating a list of things I want to do. It ranges from cleaning each room of the house to helping my son sign up for FAFSA and start applying to college—cue the tears! I can’t believe my baby is old enough to take this big step. It’s a lot to juggle, but I’m determined to find my balance and make the most of this season.

So here are 5 ways to destress and feel refreshed after the holidays:

1. Take a Nature Walk

When life feels overwhelming, there’s nothing like the serenity of nature to reset your mind and body. Whether it’s a nearby park, a peaceful trail, or even your own backyard, take a moment to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the great outdoors. Listen to the crunch of leaves underfoot, feel the sun on your skin, and let the fresh air fill your lungs. Studies have shown that being in nature reduces stress hormones, boosts your mood, and improves focus. Bonus tip? Bring along a journal or your favorite playlist to make your walk even more enjoyable. Who knows—you might even discover a new favorite spot to escape to when life gets hectic.

2. Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a game-changer when it comes to finding inner calm. You don’t need a meditation cushion or an hour of free time to start (although those are lovely if you have them!). Begin with a few deep breaths, focusing on the rhythm of your inhale and exhale. Apps like Calm or Headspace can guide you through short, effective meditations tailored to beginners or busy women. Mindfulness can also mean staying fully present in the moment, whether that’s savoring your morning coffee or noticing the details of a task at hand. These small pauses throughout your day can help you feel grounded, more present, and less stressed. Think of it as a mini-reset for your mind!

3. Declutter and Organize

The holidays often leave our homes feeling a little… chaotic. Tackle one area—your closet, kitchen counter, or even a single junk drawer—and watch how decluttering brings instant clarity. Start small to avoid feeling overwhelmed, and don’t be afraid to donate or toss items you no longer need. Create a space that sparks joy, as Marie Kondo would say. Organizing isn’t just about having a tidy space; it’s about creating an environment that supports your well-being. Light a candle, turn on some music, and make it a fun activity. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter you’ll feel once your surroundings reflect the calm you’re aiming for internally.

4. Pamper Yourself

Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential! Carve out time just for you, whether it’s a luxurious bubble bath with candles and soothing music or a DIY spa night with face masks and your favorite nail polish. Not into baths? That’s okay! Curl up under a cozy blanket with a good book or binge-watch that show you’ve been dying to see. Pair the experience with a comforting hot drink—think spiced chai, creamy hot cocoa, or a calming herbal tea. Self-care can also mean splurging on something small that makes you feel fabulous, like a new skincare product or comfy loungewear. However you choose to pamper yourself, make it a non-negotiable part of your week. You deserve it!

5. Connect with Loved Ones

There’s nothing more rejuvenating than meaningful connections with people who lift you up. Whether it’s a coffee date with your best friend, a phone call to a family member, or a heart-to-heart over wine, quality time with loved ones can help you decompress and feel supported. If you can’t meet in person, schedule a virtual hangout or write a heartfelt message to let them know you’re thinking of them. Sharing your thoughts and listening to theirs can remind you that you’re not alone in whatever you’re facing. Sometimes, laughter and good company are the best remedies for stress. Don’t forget to snap a photo or two to capture those moments of joy—it’s these little memories that make life sweet.
